In 1934 Key West during the Great Depression, Beans Curry spends his days caring for his baby brother and roaming town with his gang, including for marbles matches against rivals. A New Dealer arrives with plans to remake Key West as a vacation destination, and local adults take on cleanup and painting work. Beans needs money at home and accepts night work from a liquor runner, pulling fire alarms to distract people from illegal shipments. The job seems easy until his conscience changes his view of it.
