Freedom Braids

Nemy is enslaved on a sugarcane plantation, where her daily work includes sowing, weeding, and stripping leaves. She follows a group of women to their braiding space, where they welcome and nourish her. There, Nemy is taught the meaning carried by braids. The story connects her plantation life with the women’s shared knowledge and care, using digitally created artwork and informative endpapers to frame this part of her experience.
