Free Lunch

Rex, a sixth grader living in chronic poverty, tries to hold on to dignity, humanity, and humor while dealing with abusive parents and challenges at school. His mother enrolls him for free school meals instead of giving him lunch money, and he keeps his difficulties hidden from other students. As he manages these pressures, Rex resolves to develop his abilities as a writer. The book centers his daily struggle with poverty, school, and self-expression.
