Folk and Fairy Tales *California, the Magic Island
Doug Hansen, illustrated by Doug Hansen
Queen Calafia, a figure from a sixteenth-century Spanish romance, summons twenty-six California animals to the island of California. In the older tale, Calafia ruled an island rich in gold and inhabited by women compared to Amazons. Angered that the state has taken her name, she challenges the creatures to explain and defend that choice. The animals introduce themselves, their California home, and the people who live there. The book brings together Calafia’s legendary story, the origin of California’s name, and a group of the state’s animals.
