Flowers for Sarajevo
John McCutcheon
Set in Sarajevo in 1992 during the Balkan War, this fictional story follows Drasko, whose father is serving as a soldier and who sells flowers in the marketplace. A mortar attack kills people waiting to buy bread. In the days afterward, a cellist returns to the damaged square to play in remembrance. Drasko witnesses how the music gives a diverse crowd a way to share grief, hope, and a wish for healing.
