Firefly Song: Lynn Frierson Faust and the Great Smoky Mountain Discovery
Colleen Paeff, illustrated by Ji-Hyuk Kim
Lynn Frierson Faust spends summers in the Great Smoky Mountains watching fireflies flash in rhythm together. Scientists initially believe synchronous fireflies exist only outside the Western Hemisphere, but Lynn carefully observes what she sees. As an adult, she works with biologist Jonathan Copeland to observe, collect, and study the species later known as Photinus carolinus. Their work documents synchronous fireflies in the Western Hemisphere and brings the Smoky Mountains display to scientific attention.
