Family/School/Community Goth Girl, Queen of the Universe

Jessica, known as Jess, has been in foster care since she was seven and avoids putting down roots. At her new Michigan high school, other students see her as a witch because she is goth. At seventeen, she joins Oscar’s cosplay team in hopes that a distant costume competition will let her reunite with her biological mother, who has mental illness. The story follows Jess’s efforts to reconnect with family while finding a place on the team.
