When soldiers invaded her Dinka village, she fled with her grandmother and relatives, leaving her home behind. After her grandmother died protecting her, Achut survived with other children, was cared for by her mother’s friend Adual in a military prison camp, and eventually escaped. Together with Adual and other women and children, she traveled on foot toward a refugee camp in Kenya.
