Dear Justyce
Nic Stone
Quan, whose full name is Vernell LaQuan Banks, is held at the Fulton Regional Youth Detention Center and writes letters to his friend Justyce McAllister. Both grew up in Wynwood Heights in southwest Atlanta, but Justyce later attends Yale while Quan is incarcerated. Flashbacks trace events leading to Quan’s imprisonment, including a murder charge for a shooting he did not commit. The story portrays discriminatory treatment of African American boys in the justice system.
