Seventh graders Benji and Ro both face social exclusion. Benji is a talented artist who becomes absorbed in a comic-book series after finding a sketch that suggests his absent father created it. Biracial Chinese American Ro loves science and invention and holds an unfinished model rocket she had built with her father before his death. The two students create a science-fair entry that impresses others. Their friendship develops alongside grief and family questions.
