Cendrillon lives at the court of France, where her father had been the king’s favored adviser. After her father dies, she loses status and freedom. Her cruel stepmother and stepsisters control her circumstances under a treacherous guardianship. Cendrillon struggles with bereavement as well as the restrictions imposed on her after her father’s death. The book presents her efforts to endure this change in her family and position at court.
