A young Black boy attends his father’s funeral wearing a new suit, a new haircut, and a cape. He does not want to hear what people say or face the memories that surface during the day. At the cemetery and later at the gathering at home, he treats the cape as a shield from recollections of his father. But memories continue to arrive. Eventually, he recalls his father’s laughter, love, and the day he received the cape. Remembering helps him find his way back to a smile while he grieves.
