Can I Touch Your Hair? Poems of Race, Mistakes, and Friendship

Irene and Charles are fifth-graders assigned to work together on a poetry project. They begin as classmates who do not know one another and are unsure they want to collaborate. Their illustrated poems become conversations about race, class, privilege, mistakes, and friendship. As they work, the two children learn to recognize and honor each other’s differences.
