In 1924, a Chinese boy named Tai Go waits for an entrance interview that will decide whether he can enter the United States. Under the Chinese Exclusion Act, he and other immigrants are confined at Angel Island Immigration Station in San Francisco Bay while officials assess their claims. Tai Go endures confinement, medical examinations, and questioning intended to make detainees fail. During this wait, he finds encouragement in poems carved into barracks walls, fellow detainees prepared to defend their rights, and new friendships.
