Black Star

Twelve-year-old Charley Cuffey is a granddaughter, friend, and standout pitcher in Lee’s Mill. She hopes to become the first woman to play professional baseball, a goal she pursues as a Black girl in the American South. Her friend Cool Willie Green knows how ambitious that dream is, while Nana Kofi’s stories of courageous ancestors and long journeys encourage Charley to keep imagining a larger future. Charley also faces a consequential decision amid racial tension in her town.
