Black Star (The Door of No Return series)

In the American South during the 1920s, twelve-year-old Charley Cuffey spends her summer with her Black family and church community and plays baseball. She dreams of becoming the first woman to pitch professionally, encouraged by stories from her grandmother about ancestors and journeys. An encounter with white teenagers changes the course of that summer. Told in verse, the novel follows Charley’s ambitions, family ties, and life in a segregated society.
