Auma’s Long Run

In 1980s Kenya, thirteen-year-old Auma hopes that a track scholarship will help her leave her small village, attend high school, and eventually become a doctor. Her plans are tested by classmates, expectations around marriage, and night runners who visit while she sleeps. As AIDS devastates her village, Auma’s ambitions come into conflict with family responsibilities and tragedy at home. Running remains central to the future she is trying to build.
