Dara has grown up in a sheltered household with her single mother, Mellie. At eighteen, she wants a larger life, but finding a birth certificate she has never seen overturns what she believes about her family: two strangers are listed as her parents. When Dara confronts Mellie, she learns that Mellie is transgender and that she transitioned after Dara’s birth mother died when Dara was a baby. Dara must face the newly revealed history of her family and the questions it raises about her own life.
