An Owl at Sea
Susan Vande Griek
Based on a true event, An Owl at Sea tells of a Short-eared Owl that lands on an oil rig in the North Sea, far from shore. Weak and tired, the owl shelters on the deck while rig workers provide food and a makeshift refuge. When a helicopter carries workers home, the bird travels with them and is handed to the Scottish SPCA. Poetic text and watercolor illustrations recount the owl’s unexpected rescue at sea.
