In 2002 on Long Island, multiracial sixth grader Kamal Rao deals with bullying and xenophobia in a suburban town that does not feel inclusive. He becomes friends with Jaz, a recent immigrant from Pakistan who has a worrying home life. Through that friendship, Kamal gains a different view of his own difficulties. The novel places questions of identity and belonging alongside friendship, prejudice, and the challenges of growing up in the period after September 11.
