Akeem Keeps Bees!: A Close-Up Look at the Honey Makers and Pollinators of Sankofa Farms
Kamal Eugene William Bell, Akeem Bell, illustrated by Darnell Johnson
Told from Akeem’s perspective, this illustrated book follows a year of beekeeping with his father at the Sankofa Farms apiary. Their work starts when a package of bees arrives and is installed in a hive. Across the seasons, they inspect the hive, locate the queen, respond to a swarm, collect honey, and prepare the bees for winter. Comics and diagrams accompany the account of their work. The book also explains the role bees have on a farm and describes the farm’s efforts to support its community and local bee populations.
