After the Ashes

After the Ashes is set on Java, a colony in the Dutch East Indies, in August 1883. Two teenagers on the island have sharply contrasting ideas about their futures and what they might become. One is thirteen-year-old Katrien Courtland, who wants to establish Darwin’s theory of natural selection. A volcanic eruption brings huge waves, and both teenagers attempt to live through the catastrophe.
