After her parents separated, Ada’s mother directed her education toward logic and away from poetry, though Ada remained interested in her father and described mathematics as “poetical science.” Her friendship with inventor Charles Babbage brought her to work on programming his Analytical Engine, an early forerunner of the computer. The book tells how Lovelace’s analytical work contributed to the foundations of modern computing.
