A Thousand Beginnings and Endings

This anthology contains fifteen retellings of folktales drawn from East and South Asian cultures. Written by fifteen female authors, the stories revisit myths and legends involving lovers kept apart, immortals who interfere, assumed identities, contests of cleverness, warnings, gods, and goddesses. The collection represents the Asian diaspora through tales rooted in the contributors’ own cultural traditions. Author biographies accompany the retellings, which bring folklore into a range of new story forms.
