A Hero Like Me
Jen Reid, Angela Joy, illustrated by Leire Salaberria
This picture book draws on the June 7, 2020, toppling of a statue of Edward Colston in Bristol, England. Colston was a seventeenth-century slave trader, and protesters pulled the statue down and threw it into Bristol Harbour during an anti-racism demonstration. The book also addresses the statue’s replacement, framing the real-life event through questions of who is honored as a hero and how communities respond to racist history.
